Anti-doping is usually described as a series of tests, but the system depends more on unpredictability and record-keeping than on any single analysis.
Unannounced collection is the core principle
Many substances clear the body quickly, so a test scheduled in advance detects very little.
Athletes in registered testing pools must therefore file whereabouts information, specifying where they can be found for a window each day, and missed attempts count against them.
The requirement is intrusive by design. Its purpose is to remove any period during which an athlete can be confident of not being tested.
Chain of custody protects the result
A sample is split into two containers at collection, sealed in the athlete's presence, and recorded on documentation the athlete signs.
The second container is what allows a contested finding to be re-examined, since the athlete can request analysis of the untouched sample.
Most successful challenges to findings concern procedure rather than chemistry, which is why collection protocol is as tightly specified as the laboratory work.
Every transfer of the sample between the collection officer, the courier and the laboratory is logged, so that the seal and the paperwork together account for the sample at all times.
Samples are stored for years
Analysis methods improve, and a substance undetectable at the time of collection may become detectable later.
Storing samples for a long period allows reanalysis, and results have been overturned years after the event on that basis.
The deterrent effect matters as much as the detections. An athlete cannot know that a substance will remain undetectable for the whole storage period.
The biological passport looks for change, not substances
Rather than searching for a compound, the passport tracks an athlete's own blood and steroid values over time to establish a personal baseline.
Doping alters those values even when the substance itself has cleared, so an unexplained shift in the profile can indicate manipulation without identifying the method.
Findings of this type require expert review, because altitude, illness and training all move the same markers and must be excluded first.
Why coverage is uneven
Testing is funded and administered by national bodies, international federations and event organisers, and their resources differ enormously.
An athlete from a well-funded programme may be tested many times a year while a competitor in the same event is tested rarely.
Harmonising that coverage is a recurring aim, and the gap between countries and sports remains one of the system's clearest weaknesses.
