Wearables report a heart rate variability number each morning and athletes plan around it. The measurement is real, but what it represents is narrower than the way it is usually described.
The measurement is the spacing between beats
A heart does not beat like a metronome. The interval between consecutive beats fluctuates by small amounts even at complete rest.
Heart rate variability quantifies that fluctuation, usually by summarising how much consecutive intervals differ from one another across a measurement window.
A higher figure means more variation between beats; a lower figure means the rhythm is more uniform. Neither is inherently good outside of context.
Variation reflects nervous system balance
Two branches of the autonomic nervous system influence heart rate simultaneously: one that accelerates it under demand and one that slows it during recovery.
The recovery branch acts quickly and beat by beat, so its influence appears as variation. The stress branch acts more steadily, so its dominance appears as regularity.
A drop in variability therefore indicates that the accelerating side is currently dominant, which happens under training load, illness, poor sleep, heat, alcohol or psychological stress alike.
The number is only meaningful against your own baseline
Absolute values differ enormously between people for reasons including age, genetics and resting heart rate, so comparing figures between individuals says almost nothing.
What carries information is the deviation from a personal rolling average, measured under consistent conditions.
Conditions matter more than most users realise. Time of day, body position, breathing rate and whether the reading follows an alarm all shift the result substantially.
It indicates state, not fitness
A suppressed reading does not mean training was harmful. A hard session is supposed to depress recovery indicators temporarily, and the depression is part of the stimulus.
What the trend can reveal is a failure to return towards baseline over several days, which suggests recovery is not keeping pace with accumulated load.
The signal is non-specific, though: it cannot distinguish training fatigue from an infection or a stressful week at work.
How it is sensibly used
Coaches use it as one input among several, alongside sleep duration, session ratings and simple subjective questions, which often carry comparable information.
Persistent unexplained changes are a reason to consult a clinician rather than to adjust a training plan, since the same pattern accompanies illness.
Treated as a rough state indicator rather than a score to optimise, it is useful; treated as a verdict on a single day, it mostly produces anxiety.
